      <image:title>Signature - Signature</image:title>
<image:caption>This is the original design of my signature seen on all my official artworks. This is comprised of a fingerprint from my right index finger, followed by my cursive K and M, abbreviations to Kyle MacLachlan. The idea of this signature was inspired by my mom, who helped me consider what would make my artwork standout compared to other artists. While other artists use a logo designed solely on their name, I wanted to something different yet personal. The idea of a fingerprint came to mind, as the idea that everyone's fingerprint is 'unique' to the person. I ended up taking samples of my fingerprints for about an hour while working on this project. I used ink from a stamping case to create the prints. I was testing for how much pressure is suitable when putting ink on my finger, how much pressure to put onto the paper, the different angles to use, and which finger would be appropriate. I ultimately went with my index finger print from my right hand, because the flow that the friction ridges form. Afterwards I trialed various different signatures that overlap the print to make the signature still appear like a signature. I ended up liking this one because of the flourishes in the strokes. To digitize my print, I scanned the image onto my computer and used Adobe Illustrator's Image Trace option. It solidified the strokes into individual vector shapes, which I find helpful, as I can call upon colors in my digital work to be the color of my signature. It was a lot of fun designing a unique signature that not only works well on my traditional paper-based artwork, but also on my digital artwork.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This sketch is based on the Legend of Zelda, Twilight Princess. The character is Midna, in her Imp form. I decided to go with a different design, combining my knowledge of character drawing with background drawing. In this image, I was learning how to add details to basic images. In this case, I was learning about adding details to the bricks. I found that having just the bricks made the background look very bland, and wanted to background to have something more appealing. The upper half of this design is darker than the lower half, in the pencil sketch, this is to illustrate that the upper half of this image should be black. I wanted to make this image look dark and dreary, without adding ink or digitizing the image. This image was drawn on a 14" x 17" page with a border thickness of 3". Each brick is half an inch tall and one inch wide. The floor tiles follow the one-point perspectives rule in drawing, originating from the center of the page.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This sketch is based on the Legend of Zelda. It's modeled after the amalgamation of the official Legend of Zelda logo, the symbols on the wall of twilight, the design to the twilight portals, and the pattern on wolf Link's forehead. The idea of this pattern came from a side project I've been working on with friends. It's title is The Legend of Zelda: Heroes' Tale, and it is a tabletop Dungeons and Dragons game, inspired by The Legend of Zelda. This image was designed to be the title image to the guide book to the game. I used references to ensure that I was drawing this symbols correctly. The Legend of Zelda Logo was inspired by the cover of The Legend of Zelda Art and Artifacts book. The wall of twilight comes from the area that divides the Eldin Province from the Lanayru Province. It was the space with the widest viewing wall, making it the best reference point. The twilight portals appear all over the game, and they have similar designs. The wolf Link design was best seen on the Wolf Link Amiibio, launched by Nintendo. I decided to keep this as a pencil sketch because of the complexity of the image. I felt adding ink or color would distract viewers from the design itself. This design was drawn at on a 14" x 17" page, with a border thickness of 1".</image:caption>

      <image:title>Woodfall Swamp - Woodfall Swamp  </image:title>
<image:caption>This sketch is inspired from Legend of Zelda, Majora's Mask. It's depicting the southern swamp. The image is inspired by Akira Himekawa's depiction of the Southern Swamp in her manga, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, which provides readers with a view of what the region looks like during the plot. The idea of the swamp was really cool to me, and Majora's Mask takes this a step further by making the swamp toxic. I used this time to experiment with my sketches of bark, leaves, water, and vines. Since I don't draw environments or backgrounds often, this was a challenge. Majora's Mask is perhaps one of my favorite Zelda titles. The game is filled with dark themes, from the five stages of grief, to dealing with the passing of a loved one. It is still considered the black sheep of the series. I decided to keep this image as a pencil sketch because of how clear the image turned out. I felt that adding ink would distract from the design. The image was drawn on a 14" x 17" page, with a border thickness of 3".</image:caption>

<image:caption>This sketch is based on the Legend of Zelda, Twilight Princess. It depicts the first boss battle in the game between Link, and the Twilit Parasite, Diababa. I wanted a more cinematic image in my portfolio to showcase high details along with character design, creature design and background design. This image is not to illustrate my abilities to design original content, but rather show that I can work with created assets and design work relating to those pieces. I did take this image a step further to add color and ink to the image. The resulting image was decent, and appeals the eye, though I kept the pencil version due to the contrast between light and dark as opposed to the spectrum of colors. This image was drawn on a 14" x 17" page with a border thickness of 3".</image:caption>

      <image:title>Broken Tick - Broken Tick</image:title>
<image:caption>This image comes from a developer journal for a project I am creating called Mythos of Solaria. This image is of the front page, which is a series of clock faces and gears designed to be interconnected and layered. Mythos of Solaria is an epic fantasy tale that takes place in a modern world. There exists in this world both technology and magic, along with various races between humans, elves, dwarves, and beasts. The series is broken down into multiple stories that happen simultaneously across the kingdom, both relating to each other, and having nothing to do with each other. I wanted to design the clock itself to look highly detailed. I added details to the numbers, and used a compass design to accent every third hour. I used circles to make the remaining hours stand out, and used ticks to divide the circle into minutes. On the gears in the background, I wanted to add a pattern to them to make them appear unique and different. I decided to go with emblems of noble houses found in the series Mythos of Solaria. This sketch was drawn on a 8" x 11" page.  </image:caption>

      <image:title>Laverna - Laverna</image:title>
<image:caption>Laverna is an original character I designed as part of the Legend of Zelda series. She goes by the male name of Laverne and portrays a hunter in the wild. She usually wears a hood to hide her long hair, and talks with a deeper voice that she forces to sound more masculine. I wanted to attempt a different way to color my images, and have not tried watercolors since high school. I bought a special gel that goes onto paper to prevent the spread of watercolor into unwanted spaces. This was how I got Laverna's hair coloured without bleeding her blonde. She was inspired by many forms of Zelda throughout the series. Her hair was tied back with similar ribbons to Skyward Sword, and her hair length is inspired by Twilight Princess. I used the colors for the Zora Tunic from Ocarina of Time. Her role was to take on weaponry that required aiming and accuracy, such as using the bow, or hookshot. The idea that Link has dozens of items in his pocket seemed strange, so I was going with the idea of dividing the weapons out to other cast members. Though Laverna originates as a Zelda Original Character, she has evolved to be a unique character in her own way. She has a lengthy backstory on how she had to steal food as a child, and took on a job as a hunter to make her living, disguising herself as a man so she could earn the same amount as other male hunters. She was drawn on a 8" x 11" paper, and I used a technique called carbon copying to transfer her to a 14" x 11" watercolor page.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This motorized vehicle was designed for Mythos of Solaria. It is a piece of magitech, where it's powered by magic as opposed to the conventional chemical reactions inside of a real motorcycle. The motorcycle is the owned by one of the main protagonists in the series, Nicolas Tasserell, the Undead Prince. The bike's internal magic system makes it operate, however, the machine requires the magical signature that Nicolas is capable of, making him the sole rider of the vehicle. I used two-point perspective to position and draw the motorcycle to give the image more depth than other drawings. It started as a sketch in a sketchbook, before I made a carbon copy of the image to transfer the sketch onto a thicker board. I decided to use copic markers to color the image, and to challenge myself by only use one hue of color; blue. The entire bike is colored and shaded with blue ink, with the exception for the front headlight, which, to draw attention to the front, was coloured yellow and blue. I ended up framing this image, because of the quality and the outcome of the design. Unlike sketches, the copic markers makes this image look finished. The final design ended on a 14.5" x 13.5" artboard.</image:caption>

The final design ended on a 14.5" x 13.5" artboard.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Edin - Edin</image:title>
<image:caption>This is an original character who takes place in the Zelda Universe. His timeline placement puts him in the Legend of Zelda's Switch title - Breath of the Wild - where he is an eager engineer trying to get the ancient machines of the Guardians running again. He is considered among his allies a dense airhead, though he is levelheaded and capable of showing no emotions, making him hard to read and understand. I decided to draw this image completely in photoshop, as opposed creating a hand sketch. It was a bit harder to draw him this way because i am not used to digital artwork. I used my own references of the same character to ensure I was drawing and coloring him correctly. The book is using actual symbols from Breath of the Wild. They have real sentences, like "[...] finally designed by an ancient civilization [...]". It took a few minutes to write the entire script of the page, but it took hours to get the writing in the ancient language to make it look like an old book. Though it took time, it was worth it to make the book have its own work. Edin has a long backstory, including being mixed blood with another race, having a thief for a father and accidentally killing his mother when he was 16 years old. This backstory is designed so that it could be applied to a unique series; however, he is designed exclusively to the Zelda Universe. This picture was drawn for a 5" x 7" card.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This is a low polygon portrait of Telma's Bar from Twilight Princess. The way I did this image is using a technique I learned at SAIT called Low Poly Portrait. In Adobe Illustrator, I draw a shape, usually a triangle. over a surface in order to create an object, then using the eyedropper tool, pick a color from below the object to make the object have a color; though doing this removes the outline stroke of the object. I simply re-added the lines. I used this image for an app I developed for a group of friends. The app was for an online game I play with my friends, to convert the online game to a computer game. This was the main hub, where most of the online game was taking place, and I used this location to be where players made their character. It was the backdrop behind the text. While the image looks like it would be easy to create, this was a highly detailed location. It took two days to complete every brick. It was fun to design regardless.</image:caption>

I decided to work with a few new tools we learned on this picture, such as how to make a polymesh rather than individual shapes. and how to use modifiers to manipulate objects as well. Each part of the hunter is it's own shape, and this was before we learned how to smooth the polygons. I could have researched how to smooth the polygons and apply that to multiple objects in this picture, but I felt that the point of science fiction space works is to have sharp lines and shapes. I was new to the 3D modeling world, but still wanted to do something grande for my first project. Where other students were modelling pencils and pens, I wanted to model people.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This piece was done exclusively in photoshop. I did not draw anything direct on the project, but instead used tools and techniques to make this image. I had to do research on how to make a planet in photoshop, using the spherize adjustment on a picture of stone. Another piece I had to research was how to make space look good. I learned that there were multiple ways, but I went with the creation of black-and-white noise to generate the stars. I then used a brush tool to create the gases that surround the planets. A well placed lens flare helped create the illusion of a star, or the sun on the other side of the second planet. I used this image as the background on my computer, designed for a 1080p 27" monitor. This particular image, is a downsized version of that image.</image:caption>

      <image:title>An Educated Life - An Educated Life</image:title>
<image:caption>This piece is titled "An Educated Life" because it summed up my entire classes feelings to school. While I enjoyed the classes on photoshop, graphics design, and webdesign, not everyone shared my opinion, and I wanted to show others what exactly they were describing. I asked my friend and classmate to pose for the picture, and told him to laying head on the desk. He was absolutely confused, but did it anyways. Once he was in position, I started planting props around him, including the books, pencil, headphones, and pop can. When I showed him the picture, he laughed. I did not edit anything in this picture, using manual focus to create the look of the picture before post. I presented this picture as a class assignment, and received very positive feedback, saying that I've captured the moment.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Wind - Wind</image:title>
<image:caption>This piece of photo manipulation is part of a collection called Elements. I wanted to express the element of wind in a way that would make the most sense in a photograph. I decided to describe wind as an airy, and intellectual element. I asked a friend of mine to be the model, and gave her a specific breakdown to what sort of outfit she was required to wear - white. I got her a book titled Winter to hold to add onto the idea that wind should appear intellectual. We spent a few hours going about in a park taking pictures as she walked around, sitting around, and holding the book. The photo we ended up going with was actually an accident, where she looked up from her book to ask a question if she was holding the book correctly. The timing of the shot turned out to be the best. I created a bokeh brush in photoshop to create the dots in the picture, and then used a special swirled brush to add a the wind effect coming out of the book. I blurred the background, and finished the image with a slight touchup to my friend's colors; so that viewers could see more detail in the picture as opposed to just light and shadow.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This piece of photo manipulation is part of a collection called Elements. As I learned how to do new things in photoshop, new inspirations came to me. This is a personal picture of myself with the intent of manipulation. I had been inspired to work with the common elements as a form of magic or superpower, and wondered what sort of power I would want. In the end i decided on having powers relating to fire. I had to do a lot of research in order to figure out how to create the effect I wanted. I knew that I wanted to illustrate flames coming out of my arms, and pouring power into a surface. I used the techniques I learned on how to make skin looked cracked and applied it here against a solid wall. I used a brush to create the orange glow. I applied a separate cracked image to my arms to create the illusion of fire breaking open the skin. I darkened my arms to appear charred, then I added the flames to the picture to finalize it. This is my favorite image to both work with and design. It was designed for my facebook page, staying completely digital and not a printout design.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This piece was for an assignment at school, where we had to create an image using photoshop. I interpretted that to mean I had to turn a photo I had into something a little more interesting to tell a new story. The picture I chose is of a close friend of mine who lives over in England. I loved the angle of the photo she took, and asked if I could manipulate it in photoshop. I had to do some trials on other images first, to really understand what effects I wanted. The crack down her face comes from a crack in the ground. I then used the Liquify tool to stretch her image outward to create the illusion of her body breaking apart. Finally, i changed the color of her eye to be more artificial. I named this piece Digitalize because the picture looks like she is turning into pixels, as photographs today usually are digital images. The image is designed to be for 5" x 7" paper.</image:caption>

<image:caption>My third 3D model. This one is based on winter and Christmas. We had 2 hours to compose the project for a Christmas design. I decided to design a christmas card in a pop-up style, with the words standing out the most. on one side of the card is a snowman. The snowman has a custom designed hat, and coal for eyes and buttons. I gave the snowman arms so that he was able to hold things. On the other side of the card are 3 Christmas ornaments textured with frosted glass. To tie everything together, I added a snow machine to produce snowflakes and ran a 10 second animation. From that, I chose a single frame that had just the right amount of flakes.</image:caption>

      <image:title>A Journey Begins - A Journey Begins</image:title>
<image:caption>This is my first 3D model since I've graduated from SAIT. I decided that I wanted to work on my 3D modeling on some recognizable images. The first object I decided to work on is Nintendo and Gamefreak's "Pokeball". I chose to do three of the pokeballs because of how most Pokemon titles gives the player the option to choose one of three starters, generally between a fire-, water-, or grass- type. I was debating of making the shell of the pokeball different colors to identify this type difference, though i ultimately decided to go with the original designs. When rendering the image, I used the Mental Ray option. The colors were basic, with adjustments to add shine and gloss from the shell, and tabletop. When I finished positioning the pokeballs, I thought that the image looked empty. I created a surface below, and added dimensions to create a table-top look to the image. I added a refraction to the table so the pokeballs and be reflected off the polished wood.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This is my final project for SAITs New Media Production and Design program. I was modelling an original character, Nicolas Tasserell, the Undead Prince. I had to learn how to make clothes - his shirt, pants, and boots - as well as how to model hair. I also had to learn how to make a Low Poly body, which was interesting to make. I started off by sketching the different angles of Nicolas, his front, sides and back. I had to have 2 kinds of drawings each. the first was Nicolas with no clothes, so that I can model his body accurately, and the second was Nicolas with his clothes, so that I had an idea of how to create his clothes. The low poly body took a few days to build, due to this being the first time i've been building a character from a single object as opposed to different parts.</image:caption>

The basic design of the thumbnail is to attribute to the simple gameplay of this top-down zelda title. The Blue Frame uses the same colors in the game’s logo, and the active characters are iconic to the characters featured in the episode - in this particular episode, it’s Link and the Oracle of Ages, Nayru. There are a total of 38 Thumbnails for the Oracle Series.</image:caption>

<image:caption>On October 5, 2021, the final fighter in the game, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was announced by Masahiro Sakurai. This fighter turned out to be Sora from the Kingdom Hearts franchise, and, to this day, is the second time I was so happy for an announcement that I cried with joy. As soon as the character was announced, I jumped to my computer and began work on this thumbnail. I utilize these Smash Thumbnails as images on my Google Chrome slideshows, as a reminder of the 86 official fighters in the game.</image:caption>

      <image:title>DyrezzPlays Logo Collection - Logo Collection</image:title>
<image:caption>As early as December of 2020, DyrezzPlays, my YouTube Account, has been very active with it’s logo designs. At the time, it was already operating it’s twelfth series YouTube, and had used a very standard Logo prior. However, some YouTubers’ that I follow have a unique approach to their Logo Designs. They alter the logo based on the series they are broadcasting, from the style of their logo, to the character design being shifted. I decided I wanted to follow this approach, and alter my logo based on the broadcasted series, which also helps in challenging my logo designing skills, and helps me learn new techniques that can improve the logo. Various skills and techniques are exercised during the development of the logo: creating a 5-point gradient that shifts between the colors of the rainbow, developing shapes and backgrounds that simulate a key aspect of the game, or learning how to apply patterns to a shape to emulate an effect. There are currently 29 logos, with one series still lacking a design. The games demonstrated from the logos are listed below: 1) Super Mario World 2) The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Master Quest 3) New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe 4) Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Classic Mode 5) Spyro Reignited Trilogy 6) Octopath Traveler 7) Luigi’s Mansion 3 8) Pokemon Sword Blind 9) The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening 10) Pokemon Sword: Isle of Armor DLC 11) Super Mario 3D All-Stars: Super Mario 64 12) Pokemon Sword: Crown Tundra DLC 13) Super Mario 3D All-Stars: Super Mario Sunshine 14) Super Mario 3D All-Stars: Super Mario Galaxy 15) Metroid Prime 16) Super Mario Odyssey 17) Metroid Prime 2: Echoes 18) Metroid Prime 3: Corruption 19) Mario Kart 8 Deluxe 20) Donkey Kong Country 21) Super Mario 3D World: Bowser’s Fury Mode 22) Super Mario Bros. 3 23) The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages 24) The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons 25) Persona 5 Royals 26) Metroid Dread 27) Pokemon Briliant Diamond Nuzlocke Challenge 28) Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle 29) New Super Luigi Bros.
